Orchid Special Offers

This month's Specials include big savings on a selection of plants from our listings.

Phalaenopsis Orchids

It is not difficult to see why the Phalaenopsis, or Moth Orchid, has become the top selling pot plant in Europe.

(1) They are stunningly beautiful and, having no set season, can be flowered throughout the year.
(2) Suitably sited in our homes they last in flower for months and will generally re-flower within 12 months.
(3) As a gift, they offer better value for money than the average bunch of flowers.

McBean's will send your friends (or yourself) a Moth Orchid in the peak of condition on next day delivery. Just tell us where and when you want it delivered, and give us the words for the greetings card.

Cymbidium Orchids

Cymbidium are terrestrial orchids that grow naturally in China, Japan, the Himalayas, SE Asia. the Philippines and Australia. They flourish almost anywhere where the summers are warm and bright and the autumn and winter nights are cool. Cymbidium flower annually - in the period late autumn to spring - and are long lasting, up to 3 months.
Excellent for cut flowers. Cultivation is uncomplicated, making Cymbidium suitable for growers new to orchids.

Odontoglossum Orchids

Considered by many to be the most beautiful of the orchid family, odontoglossum are mainly cool/intermediate growing plants, suitable for the glasshouse, conservatory, or indoors.
They flower particularly during late autumn, winter and spring. Blooms may last up to 2 months on the plant.

Please note: plants are seedlings unless stated otherwise. There may be some natural variation between siblings.

Zygopetalum Orchids

Zygopetalum grow both as terrestrial plants and epiphytes (air plants), and originate from South America. They are gaining in popularity due to their wonderful scent.
They make excellent pot plants and have great potential as a cut flower.
Cultivation is straightforward and suitable for growers new to orchids.

Our plants are from seed unless stated otherwise and natural variation may therefore apply.

Paphiopedilum Orchids

Certainly some of the more spectacular plants on the planet.
Members of the genus Paphiopedilum from Asia are known as Slipper Orchids (not to be confused with the temperate Cypripedium).
The New World equivalent is the Phragmipedium from Central America (next section).
All 3 genus have in common the pouched-shaped lip resembling a slipper and membership of the subfamily Cypripedioideae.

Other Warm Growing Orchids

Outside of our 4 main categories we maintain stocks of a wide range of interesting plants for the collector.

Cypripedium Orchids

Delightful herbaceous perennials for shady damp gardens or for the alpine house, the Slipper Orchids are terrestrial hardy orchids found primarily in the colder climates of North America, Europe and Asia.
Sadly, many of these beautiful species are losing the battle against the modern world and wild populations are reducing. None of the plants we offer has been taken from the wild.
Careful choice of site makes garden cultivation straightforward, though care must be taken to avoid drying out of pot-grown plants.

Other Hardy & Mediterranean orchids

Ophrys, Dactylorhiza, Epipactis, Spiranthes, Bletilla and, of course, Serapias. Flasks may also be available.
